NOTE: Monsanto's Roundup has been used
over thousands of acres of land in a bid to destroy coca
plantations as part of the US-backed 'war on drugs'. Both
the Colombian government, which has been in charge of the
aerial spraying, and the US Environmental Protection Agency
have maintained that the herbicide is entirely
safe. EXTRACTS: In addition to expected
symptoms - including vomiting and diarrhoea, blurred vision,
and difficulty in breathing - the researchers found a
significantly higher degree of DNA damage - 600 to 800 per

'damages DNA' Aerial spraying could damage locals health

http://www.scidev.net/news/index.cfm?fuseaction=readnews&... [BOGOTA] Aerial spraying of a
herbicide by the Colombian government on the border of
Colombia and Ecuador has caused a high degree of DNA damage
in local Ecuadorian people, according to a study. The research will be published in the
next issue of Genetics and Molecular Biology. The scientists, from the Pontificia
Catholic University in Ecuador, analysed blood samples from
24 Ecuadorians living within three kilometres of the border
of the two countries. Aerial spraying of a herbicide
formulation containing glyphosate - sold under the name
Roundup by Monsanto - took place on the Colombian side of
the border between late 2000 and early 2001. The Colombian government sprays
illegal coca plantations - used to make cocaine - as part of
its 'war on drugs'. According to the paper, the
application rate of the herbicide (litres per hectare) was
20 times the maximum recommended rate for the formulated
product. Half the individuals in the group
received spraying directly over their houses, and the blood
samples were taken within two months of the spraying taking
place. For comparison, blood samples were
taken from 21 Ecuadorian individuals living 80 kilometres
away from the border, where aerial spraying of the herbicide
formulation did not take place. In addition to expected symptoms -
including vomiting and diarrhoea, blurred vision, and
difficulty in breathing - the researchers found a
significantly higher degree of DNA damage - 600 to 800 per
cent higher - in the people living near the border compared
with those 80 kilometres away. The researchers ruled out tobacco,
alcohol, non-prescription drugs and asbestos as causing the
DNA damage. None of the individuals used or had been exposed
to other herbicides or pesticides when the samples were
taken. DNA damage may activate genes
associated to the development of cancer, lead researcher
Cesar Paz y Mino told SciDev.Net, and may also lead to
miscarriage or malformations in embryos. Both Colombia and Ecuador have formed
national scientific and technical commissions to study the
effects of aerially spraying this herbicide formulation,
with the Ecuadorian commission concluding it does affect
humans and the Colombian commission refuting this claim (see
Pesticides used in Colombian war on drugs 'not
harmful'). President of the Colombian commission,
Alberto Gomez Mejia, told SciDev.Net that it is difficult to
establish the real cause of the effects of agrochemicals in
humans. Reference: Genetics and Molecular

http://www.gmwatch.org --- The healing power of honey: The healing power of honey: From burns
to weak bones, raw honey can help From: News Target.com - information that
empowers NewsTarget) Raw honey which has
not been pasteurized or filtered, and ideally taken directly
from the hive is a treasure chest of nutritional
value and medicinal remedies. It contains an abundance of
vitamins and minerals and is a natural and powerful
medicine, both internally and externally. The list of honey's beneficial
functions is a long one. Honey increases calcium absorption;
can increase hemoglobin count and treat or prevent anemia
caused by nutritional factors; can help arthritic joints,
when combined with apple cider vinegar; fights colds and
respiratory infections of all kinds; can help to boost
gastrointestinal ulcer healing; works as a natural and
gentle laxative; aids constipation, allergies and obesity;
provides an array of vitamins and minerals; and supplies
instant energy without the insulin surge caused by white
sugar. Many have found raw honey helpful for its positive
effects against allergies and hay fever, and one or two
teaspoons last thing at night can help with insomnia. As an
antiseptic, honey is also a drawing agent for poisons from
bites or stings or infected wounds, and has outperformed
antibiotics in treatments for stomach ulcerations, gangrene,
surgical wound infections, surgical incisions and the
protection of skin grafts, corneas, blood vessels and bones
during storage and shipment. "Raw
honey is exceptionally
effective internally against bacteria and parasites. Plus,
raw honey contains natural antibiotics, which help kill
microbes directly. Raw honey, when applied topically, speeds
the healing of tissues damaged by infection and/or trauma.
It contains vitamins, minerals and enzymes, as well as
sugars, all of which aid in the healing of
wounds." So writes Dr. Cass Igram, D.O. in The
Survivor's Nutritional Pharmacy. In a fascinating modern
development, scientists and doctors are beginning to
rediscover the effectiveness of honey as a wound treatment.
In recent years, honey has been used effectively in clinical
settings for the treatment of fist-sized ulcers extending to
the bone, as well as for first, second and third degree
burns. Complete healing has been reported without the need
for skin grafts and with no infection or muscle loss. It can
be applied full strength to such conditions, covered with a
sterile bandage, and changed daily. When the wounds are
clean, honey acts as a healer. This also is the same
procedure for infected wounds, ulcerations and impetigo.
Garlic honey can also be applied directly to infected
wounds, which will help clean up the area of
infection. Dr. Peter Molan, professor of
biochemistry at Waikato University, New Zealand, has been at
the forefront of honey research for 20 years. He heads the
university's Honey Research Unit, which is internationally
recognized for its expertise in the antimicrobial properties
of honey. Clinical observations and experimental studies
have established that honey has effective antibacterial and
anti-inflammatory properties. Astonishingly, it painlessly
removes pus, scabs and dead tissue from wounds and
stimulates new tissue growth. "Randomized trials have shown
that honey is more effective in controlling infection in
burn wounds than silver sulfadiazine, the antibacterial
ointment most widely used on burns in hospitals," explains
Dr. Molan. Dr. Molan believes that if honey were
used from the start in cases of septicemia, there would be
far less tissue damage resulting. "The remarkable ability of
honey to reduce inflammation and mop up free radicals should
halt the progress of the skin damage like it does in burns,
as well as protecting from infection setting in", says Dr.
Molan. "At present, people are turning to honey when nothing
else works. But there are very good grounds for using honey
as a therapeutic agent of first choice." Researchers believe that the
therapeutic potential of honey is grossly underutilized.
With increasing interest in the use of alternative therapies
and as the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria
spreads, honey may finally receive its due recognition as a
wound healer. Indeed, it works: Raw honey makes a
sterile, painless and effective wound dressing. Apply it
directly to open cuts, abrasions and burns, and cover it
with a piece of gauze. The results will occur quicker than
with conventional alternatives, such as salves and
creams. Honey
is also exceptionally effective for respiratory ailments.
One Bulgarian study of almost 18,000 patients found that it
improved chronic bronchitis, asthmatic bronchitis, chronic
and allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. It's an effective
treatment for colds, flu, respiratory infections and a
generally depressed immune system. Whereas sugar shuts down
the immune system, a good quality honey will stimulate it
into action. Here are some more ways to utilize the
healing power of honey: BURNS - Apply freely over burns. It
cools, removes pain and aids fast healing without scarring.
Apart from being a salve and an antibiotic, bacteria simply
cannot survive in honey. BED WETTING - A teaspoon of honey
before bed aids water retention and calms fears in
children. INSOMNIA - A dessertspoon of honey in
a mug of warm milk aids sleep and works wonders. HYPERACTIVITY - Replace all use of
white sugar with honey. White sugar is highly stimulating
with no food qualities. Honey provides the energy without
the "spike." NASAL CONGESTION - Place a
dessertspoon of honey in a basin of water and inhale fumes
after covering your head with a towel over the basin. Very
effective! FATIGUE - Dissolve a dessertspoon of
honey in warm water or quarter honey balance of water in a
jug and keep in the fridge. Honey is primarily fructose and
glucose, so it's quickly absorbed by the digestive system.
Honey is a unique natural stabilizer: Ancient Greek athletes
took honey for stamina before competing and as a reviver
after competition. FACIAL DEEP CLEANSER - Mix honey with
an equal quantity of oatmeal, and apply as a face pack.
Leave on for half an hour, then wash it off. Great as a deep
cleanser for acne and other unwanted blemishes. POOR DIGESTION - Mix honey with an
equal quantity of apple cider vinegar and dilute to taste
with water. This is also wonderful for the joints and
promotes weight loss. HAIR CONDITIONER - Mix honey with an
equal quantity of olive oil, cover head with a warm tower
for half an hour then shampoo off. Feeds hair and scalp.
Your hair will never look or feel better! SORE THROATS - Let a teaspoon of honey
melt in the back of the mouth and trickle down the throat.
Eases inflamed raw tissues. FOR STRESS - Honey in water is a
stabilizer, calming highs and raising lows. Use
approximately 25 percent honey to water. ANEMIA - Honey is the best blood
enricher by raising corpuscle content. The darker the honey,
the more minerals it contains. FOOD PRESERVATIVE If you
replace the sugar in cake and cookie recipes with honey,
they'll stay fresher longer due to honey's natural
antibacterial properties. Reduce liquids in the mixture by
about one-fifth to allow for the moisture present in the in
honey. BABY'S BOTTLE - Four teaspoons of
honey to a baby's bottle of water is an excellent pacifier
and multivitamin additive. If the baby's motions are too
liquid, then reduce the honey by half a teaspoon; if too
solid increase by half a teaspoon. (Caution: Don't give raw
honey to babies under 1 year old; it's just too rich.) For
teething, honey rubbed on a baby's gums is also a mild
sedative and anesthetic. OSTEOPOROSIS Research has shown
that a teaspoon of honey per day aids calcium utilization
and prevents osteoporosis probably not a bad idea for
anyone over 50. LONGEVITY - The most long-lived people
in the world are all regular users of honey. An interesting
fact, yet to be explained, is that beekeepers suffer less
from cancer and arthritis than any other occupational group
worldwide. MIGRAINE - Use a dessertspoon of honey
dissolved in half a glass of warm water. Sip at the start of
a migraine attack, and, if necessary, repeat after another
20 minutes. CONJUNCTIVITIS - Dissolve honey in an
equal quantity of warm water. When cooled, apply as a lotion
or eye bath. COUGH MIXTURE Combine 6 ounces
(170 grams) liquid honey, 2 ounces (55 grams) glycerin and
the juice of two lemons. Mix well. Bottle and cork firmly,
and use as required. Raw
honey may become granulated,
as some does after a week and another maybe only after
several years. If the granulations bother you, simply place
the honey into a pan of hot water (not boiling) and let it
stand until becoming liquid again. Kelly Joyce Neff has an

Hundreds of personal care products
contain untested, unapproved nano-scale ingredients that may
pose consumer safety concerns Title Hundreds of personal care products
contain untested, unapproved nano-scale ingredients that may
pose consumer safety concerns by Ben Kage From: NewsTarget.com printable article
Originally published October 11 2006 (NewsTarget) A computer analysis of
25,000 personal care product labels -- conducted by
non-profit research organization, the Environmental Working
Group -- found that hundreds of the products contain
nano-sized or micronized materials, which can be very
hazardous and unpredictable, according to the
FDA. Nano-materials' small size and
exceptionally high surface area to volume ratio can produce
chemical or physical properties that are vastly different
from their larger counterparts. The analysis showed that
more than 250 of the analyzed personal care products contain
one or more of 57 different nano-scale ingredients that were
identified on the labels, and another 9,500 contained
ingredients that could be either nano- or
conventional-sized, but were not clearly identified one way
or the other. Without a clear government definition
for nano-sized materials, quantifying how much is present in
any given personal care product is difficult, stated a news
release at the EWG website, ewg.org. Neither the FDA nor the
Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel (CIR) has
substantiated the safety of nano-scale materials, which
means cosmetics manufacturers do not have to divulge the
science supporting the safety of the materials to either the
FDA or consumers. It is standard to rely on the CIR to
assess the safety of ingredients, but the EWG release noted
that the panel had not assessed a single nano-material, and
had only reviewed 11 percent of conventional cosmetic
ingredients. "The industry may have the studies to
support the safety of these nano-materials, but they are not
required to make any of this information available to the
public," said Jane Houlihan, vice president for research at
EWG, and author of the assessment. "Manufacturers seem to be
following the pattern they established with conventional
chemical ingredients: Put poorly tested chemicals into
personal care products and do the science later if at
all." In response to the safety issues
raised by the lack of safety definitions for nano-materials,
the EWG is calling for the FDA to: -- "Define, through a public process,
what substantiation of safety means for nano-materials.
Require industry to make public all of the studies it has
substantiating the claim that products containing
nano-materials are safe." -- "Identify the presence of
nano-materials in all products." -- "Request information on particle
size from all personal care product
manufacturers." A list of nano-materials and
micronized ingredients, as well as the products that contain
them, can be found at www.ewg.org. Wednesday, January 31, 2007
The FDA may finally be taking a way overdue baby-step at tackling drug safety problems that have plagued the agency, notifying drugmakers that manufacture antihistamines with carbinoxamine as the active ingredient -- and not approved for use by the FDA -- they have up to 90 days to stop producing those medications.
The reason: Carbinoxamine has been linked to the deaths of 21 children, under age 3. Even worse, 26 drugmakers produce some 120 medications containing carbinoxamine, and only two drugs (both made by Mikart Inc.) have been approved by the FDA.
Unfortunately, that's just the tip of the iceberg because carbinoxamine drugs represent only a fraction of the thousands of prescription drugs sold on the market that never got approved by the FDA. In fact, the federal agency figures 2 percent of the prescription drugs sold in America have never been reviewed or, for that matter, deemed safe.Remember, the common cold is a product of a weakened immune system, a condition that be prevented safely, naturally and without the need for a potentially toxic drug. Warning: Toxic Chemical Triclosan Can
Turn Your Toothpaste into Chloroform By Mike Adams For years, I have warned people of the
danger of personal care products. If you look at the
ingredients manufacturers put in their products -- soaps,
deodorants, toothpastes and so on -- you will be horrified.
These ingredients are highly toxic and cause cancer. They
promote leukemia, nervous system disorders and liver
problems. Now, some new information has come from Virginia
Tech. Researchers that have found that the chemical
triclosan, which is found in a lot of antimicrobial soaps
and toothpaste products, can react with chlorine in the tap
water. Guess what you get? (This is the horrifying part.)
Chloroform. This is a toxic chemical that can give you
cancer. In the old movies, you might have seen someone give
a person chloroform to knock them unconscious. If you
breathe enough chloroform, you will die. If you are brushing your teeth with
toothpaste that has triclosan in it, and you are rinsing
with tap water that has chlorine in it, you are getting a
little chemical reaction right in your mouth. What a
wonderful gift from the toothpaste manufacturers. That's not
to mention that some of the toothpastes contain fluoride
that isn't really fluoride but fluorosilicic acid, which is
a toxic waste product that is molecularly similar to
fluoride but has a much different effect on the human body
-- a toxic effect. When you wash your hands with
antibacterial soap that contains triclosan, you are getting
the fumes emitted from this chemical reaction. |
NEWS ALERT-IMMEDIATE
ATTENTION:
If You Take DHEA Supplements, You
Might Be A Criminal!
JUNE 14, 2005 CHICAGO / On May 26, 2005, Senators John McCain (R-Arizona), George Allen (R-Virginia), and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) introduced a new Senate bill, S. 1137, which seeks to add DHEA to the list of federally controlled anabolic steroids.
DHEA - or dehydroepiandrosterone - is secreted by the adrenal glands and is the most abundant natural steroid-like compound in the human body. It is involved in the manufacture of testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, and corticosterone. DHEA declines with age, so by age 65, our bodies make only 10 to 20% of what they did at age 20. DHEA has been an enormously popular anti-aging supplement for middle-aged and elderly Americans. Many anti-aging specialists believe that replacing DHEA in later life will have multiple beneficial effects. Anti-aging physicians recommend DHEA to patients because it can enhance immune resistance against infection, reduce the risk of age-related diseases, including cancer, coronary artery disease, and osteoporosis, improve blood sugar control and help prevent type II diabetes, facilitate weight loss and help convert fat to lean muscle, control Alzheimer's disease, lupus, AIDS, Epstein-Barr virus infection, and chronic fatigue syndrome, treat herpes, menopause, depression, memory, and erectile dysfunction, and increase life expectancy.
The suggestion that DHEA can cause adverse side effects such as liver damage, stroke, heart disease, cancer, etc. in humans has, to-date, failed to be proven by scientific study. Indeed, its daily use by millions of people for general health benefits argue strongly to the contrary. The careful use of DHEA in a controlled setting, monitored by a physician, is both and safe and efficacious. To strip Americans of their access to DHEA without demonstrated public health risks is unwarranted.
Senate Bill 1137 seeks to ban the over-the-counter availability of DHEA, effectively criminalizing those who rely on this supplement for its life enhancement benefits. DHEA will move from a current safe supplement to the list of controlled substances classifying it as an anabolic steroid if opposition is not mounted against this new bill.
Please take action today to oppose S.1137 or DHEA will no longer be obtainable. To write your elected officials and tell them that you support the continued freedom of availability of DHEA supplements, go to the Save Our Supplements website www.saveoursupplements.org. Just put your ZIP code into the designated box in the top left corner and click Go to send an e-mail to your Senators and Representative letting them know you oppose any legislation that would make DHEA illegal.
Freedoms must be fought for and protected, if we are to preserve our right of an individual's right to choose - including continued access to options in healthcare. Your health depends on your taking action today!

How safe are our supplements in America - Really ?
By Dr Andrew Saul
Natural health products, such as amino acids, herbs, vitamins and other nutritional supplements, have an extraordinarily safe usage history. In the USA, close to half of the population takes herbal or nutritional supplements every day. That is over 145,000,000 individual doses daily, for a total of over 53 billion doses annually.
The most elementary of forensic arguments is, where are the bodies? Turn to the 2003 Annual Report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers Toxic Exposures Surveillance System, published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, Vol. 22, No. 5, September 2004.
Pharmaceutical drugs, on the other hand,
caused over 2,000 poison control-reported deaths, including
Antibiotics: 13 deaths
Antidepressants: 274 deaths
Antihistamines: 64 deaths
Cardiovascular drugs: 162 deaths
It would be incorrect to state that only prescription drugs kill people. In 2003,
there were 59 deaths from aspirin alone. Other deaths reported by the American Association of Poison Control Centers included: aerosol air fresheners: 2 deaths nailpolish remover: 2 deaths perfume/cologne/aftershave: 2 deaths charcoal: 3 deaths dishwashing detergent: 3 deaths (and interestingly, weapons of mass destruction: 0 deaths)
In America in 2003, there were 28 deaths from heroin, and yet acetaminophen ("Tylenol") alone killed 147. Though acetaminophen killed over five times as many, few would say that we should make this generally-regarded-as-safe, over-the-counter pain reliever require a prescription. Even caffeine killed two people in 2003, a number equal to the two fatalities attributed to non-iron vitamin/mineral supplements. Tea, coffee and cola soft drinks are not sold with restriction, prescription, or in childproof bottles, and rather few would maintain that they need to be.
IN PERSPECTIVE
Supplementation's harshest critics have traditionally railed against vitamins
(especially in large doses) as being outright "dangerous" and at the very least "a waste of money." Yet nutritional supplements are very safe, and for much of the population, very necessary. . . To illustrate how extraordinarily important supplements are to persons with a questionable diet, consider this: Children who eat hot dogs once a week double their risk of a brain tumor. Kids eating more than twelve hot dogs a month (that's barely three hot dogs a week) have nearly ten times the risk of leukemia as children who ate none.

Zinc How important is it ?
Zinc, the brain and behavior.
Pfeiffer CC, Braverman ER.The total content of zinc in the adult human body averages almost 2 g. This is approximately half the total iron content and 10 to 15 times
the total body copper. In the brain, zinc is with iron, the most concentrated metal. The highest levels of zinc are found in the hippocampus in synaptic vesicles, boutons, and mossy fibers. Zinc is also found in large concentrations in the choroid layer of the retina which is an extension of the brain. Zinc plays an important role in axonal and synaptic transmission and is necessary for nucleic acid metabolism and brain tubulin growth and phosphorylation. Lack of zinc has been implicated in impaired DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis during brain development. For these reasons, deficiency of zinc during pregnancy and lactation has been shown to be related to many congenital abnormalities of the nervous system in offspring.
Furthermore, in children insufficient levels of zinc have been associated
with lowered learning ability, apathy, lethargy, and mental retardation.
Hyperactive children may be deficient in zinc and vitamin B-6 and have an excess
of lead and copper. Alcoholism, schizophrenia, Wilson's disease, and Pick's disease
are brain disorders dynamically related to zinc levels.
Zinc has been employed with success to treat Wilson's disease, achrodermatitis
enteropathica, and specific types of schizophrenia.

Shampoos, Skin Creams and Other Products Found to Lack Safety Data
WASHINGTON, June 14-2004 Environmental Working Group (EWG) today petitioned the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to recall or issue warning labels on a wide array of personal care products whose ingredients have not been adequately assessed for safety or may harm health.
The legal action was prompted by a 6-month EWG computer investigation. Researchers found that 356 personal care products contain ingredients that, according to the chemical industry's own review panel, lack sufficient data to support their safe use in personal care products. The products included shampoos, shaving products, moisturizers and other common items sold under brand names such as Jergens, L'Oreal, St. Ives, Dove and more.
The EWG study found that another 19 products, including Desitin Diaper Rash Ointment and Stridex Triple Action Pads, contain ingredients that, according to industry assessments, may cause harm when used as directed on the product label. EWG seeks a recall or warning label on those products as well. Only 11 per cent of 10,500 personal care product ingredients have been publicly assessed for safety.
The EWG petition is the most comprehensive legal challenge FDA has faced over personal care products to date. Because FDA has no definition for the term "safe" as it applies to personal care products, EWG requested the Agency give practical meaning to its term "adequately substantiated for safety." EWG also petitioned FDA to require internet vendors to clearly list all ingredients in all products they are selling, and to assess the safety of chemical ingredients that have not been studied by industry or the government.
The FDA has no authority to require safety tests before chemicals can be put in personal care products and used by consumers.
"Most consumers believe that if a product is on a store shelf, government scientists have approved it," said EWG Vice President for Research Jane Houlihan. "But the $35 billion cosmetics industry appears to have the freedom to put whatever chemicals it wants into our personal care products. FDA needs to update decades-old safeguards and make sure that personal care products on store shelves contain only ingredients that have been proven safe."
Charlotte Brody, executive director of Commonweal, said, "Cosmetics companies that sell products in Europe have to remove chemicals that can cause cancer, mutations, and birth defects from their products no later than September to comply with a new law. Today I ask those companies to sell their safer, reformulated products to American consumers as well."
Arianne Callender, general counsel for EWG, said, "The FDA studies food and drugs with care and caution before allowing them to be sold in stores. Shouldn't our personal care products at least meet the same safety standards as food? We petition FDA today to remove from store shelves or put warning labels on products whose ingredients have not met scientific safety standards. We ask for meaning behind the word, 'safe,' and we seek scientific study of ingredients in personal care products that could cause harm."
Consumers can read the petition at http://www.ewg.org and use EWG's "Skin Deep" website to learn what health effects are associated with ingredients in their own personal care products.

Before
You Eat Splenda
12 Questions You Need Answered
A national consumer group has asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate misleading claims made by Johnson & Johnson's McNeil Nutritionals division that imply Splenda is a "natural" product. According to a letter from Generation Green, an advocacy group favoring corporate and governmental policies that protect children from exposure to toxins, McNeil has intentionally blurred the line between artificial and natural by using the word "sugar" in advertising Splenda.
The letter urges federal regulators to halt McNeil's misleading advertising campaign and compel the company to disseminate accurate information to its customers.
Generation Green disputes McNeil's claim that Splenda is "made from SUGAR so it tastes like SUGAR." Fact is, sugar isn't even listed as an ingredient on any Splenda labeling. Moreover, some of the chemicals that are included in the making of Splenda include chlorine and phosgene, a poisonous gas.
And with the new push to use Splenda as an ingredient in baking, McNeil's advertising efforts have certainly conveyed that "natural" message effectively, if not explicitly in ads or on packages, and especially for parents to share with their kids. Even worse, during an online forum, Dr. Arthur Agatston, creator of the seriously flawed South Beach Diet said "Splenda is natural," when asked by a consumer about side effects.
Just a few of the horrible side effects of Splenda:
Up to a 40 percent shrinkage of the thymus glands
Enlarged liver and kidneys
Atrophy of lymph follicles in the spleen and thymus
I strongly urge you to learn more about the dangerous truth behind Splenda by reading a special testimonial page devoted to this subject. Good article in " USA Today "
The June 23, 2004, issue of "USA Today" has an interesting article at the bottom of page 11D titled "Estrogen Therapy Linked to Higher Risk of Dimentia". This article reports results from the Women's Health Initiative Study which is a governmnet-sponsored trial of postmenopausal hormones. The study randomly assigned volunteers to estrogen plus progestin to protect their uterus if they had one, estrogen alone if they didn't, or a placebo.
Researchers halted the estrogen-progestin study in July 2002 when it became apparant that the negatives (higher chance of heart attack, stroke, breast cancer and blood clots) outweighed the positives (lower chance of fractures and colon cancer). They halted the estrogen-only study in February when it bacame apparant that women on estrogen alone were 50% more likely to develop dimentia than those on placebo.
